The Pattern Library records the common patterns of events that have the potential to lead to project failure.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Name : <\/strong>Silos<br \/>\n<strong>Type\u00a0:\u00a0<\/strong>Behavioral pattern (patterns that influence the actions of an individual or group)<\/p>\n<p><strong>In brief :<br \/>\n<\/strong>Organizational boundaries between groups and organizations prevent free flows of communications or collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outline :<br \/>\n<\/strong>Many project teams are formed by resources from a number of different groups or organizations.\u00a0 In some cases the organizational boundaries between groups form walls that prevent the team acting as a single integrated entity.\u00a0\u00a0 Errors, omissions and bad assumptions arise at the interfaces between groups as different groups have different understandings of their own roles and the roles of others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The resulting communications breakdowns result in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?p=867\">&#8220;Intellectual disintegration&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0(groups heading in different directions because of different understandings) and ineffective teamwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Typical sequence of events :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Team is formed from resources in different departments or\u00a0different organizations<\/li>\n<li>Individuals fail to gel as a single team<\/li>\n<li>Individuals focus on performing the role as they define it within their own group.\u00a0 Assumptions about roles of other groups are never formally discussed<\/li>\n<li>Resulting gaps allow for errors and omissions to grow<\/li>\n<li>Late breaking issues arise as a result of\u00a0the errors and omissions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Negative effects :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Undetected errors and omissions<\/li>\n<li>Increased burden on project&#8217;s leadership as they manage issues arising from\u00a0poor collaboration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Common Root Causes :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Significant culture differences between groups<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?p=697\">Gravitation <\/a>(we are familiar with our own groups and hence focus internally within our own group rather than thinking of the needs of the overall project)<\/li>\n<li>Allegiance to one group and the tendency to externalise all problems onto other groups.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Suggested Actions :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Co-locate people from different groups into a single team office or location<\/li>\n<li>Create a\u00a0team culture that is stronger than the allegiance to the individual groups<\/li>\n<li>Establish clear expectations concerning how the team will work and interact together<\/li>\n<li>Ensure people from different groups share their expectations and assumptions with everyone else so that assumptions about roles and ways of interacting are surfaced and addressed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following entry is a part of the Pattern Library.
