{"id":3146,"date":"2011-09-10T14:33:52","date_gmt":"2011-09-10T18:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?p=3146"},"modified":"2020-01-16T13:07:36","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T21:07:36","slug":"bc-ferries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?p=3146","title":{"rendered":"BC Ferries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following entry is a record in the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?page_id=3\">Catalogue of Catastrophe<\/a>\u201d &#8211;\u00a0a list of failed and troubled projects from around the world.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>BC Ferries &#8211; Government of British Columbia <\/strong>&#8211; Canada<br \/>\n<strong>Project :<\/strong> Fast ferries<br \/>\n<strong>Project type :\u00a0<\/strong>Design, build, deploy high speed ferries<br \/>\n<strong>Date :<\/strong> Jun 2002<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Cost :<\/strong>$460M CAD<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synopsis :<\/strong><br \/>\nDriven in part by congestion problems being experienced at one of the main ferry terminals in Vancouver British Columbia, the government of British Columbia decided that a new fleet of high-speed car\/passenger ferries was needed to speed up transportation between the Canadian mainland and Vancouver Island. \u00a0Built locally a fleet of 3 aluminum hulled craft were built at a cost of $460M (the original budget had been $210M). \u00a0Sadly once delivered it was found that the craft were unable to use their higher cruising speed because of the effect the wake had on the shoreline. \u00a0The craft were also unreliable and had trouble dealing with flotsam found in the local waters. \u00a0After just a few months in service the complete fleet was withdrawn from service. \u00a0The boats were auctioned off a few years later for just $19M. \u00a0Even the auction process is said to have been flawed as other bidders were reported to be willing to pay up to $88M for the fleet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contributing factors as reported in the press:<\/strong><br \/>\nPolitical decision makers refused to listen to those who had the technical knowledge. \u00a0Political goals outweighed technical considerations. \u00a0Lack of cost controls.
