Failure to engage and understand stakeholder requirements however results in products being produced that fail to meet the needs of the stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Typical sequence of events :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sponsor elects to freeze the stakeholders out of the planning process<\/li>\n<li>Project appears to make rapid progress in early stages<\/li>\n<li>When product created by the project is delivered, stakeholders are finally engaged<\/li>\n<li>Stakeholders reject the product because it fails to meet their real needs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Possible negative effects :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A breakdown in trust between stakeholders and the management responsible for the project<\/li>\n<li>Products that are rejected by the stakeholders once delivered<\/li>\n<li>The need to completely redo the project or make very major changes in order to satisfy stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Common Root Causes :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A sponsor who fails to appreciate the human side of the project and what it takes to build buy-in and support<\/li>\n<li>Arrogance (when a Sponsor feels they know best and are able to speak on behalf of everyone else).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Suggested Actions :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Perform stakeholder analysis<\/li>\n<li>Plan an effective stakeholder engagement strategy<\/li>\n<li>Gather requirements from stakeholders and build their support for the project through effective and ongoing consultation and communication.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following entry is a part of the\u00a0Pattern Library.
