{"id":813,"date":"2008-09-23T18:58:51","date_gmt":"2008-09-23T22:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?p=813"},"modified":"2022-12-28T10:18:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T18:18:00","slug":"department-of-defense-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?p=813","title":{"rendered":"Department of Defense &#8211; Australia &#8211; Helicopters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following entry is a record in the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/calleam.com\/WTPF\/?page_id=3\">Catalogue of Catastrophe<\/a>\u201d &#8211;\u00a0a list of failed and troubled projects from around the world.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Department of Defense &#8211; Australia<br \/>\nProject : <\/strong>Seasprite Helicopters<br \/>\n<strong>Date :<\/strong> May 2006 <strong>Cost :<\/strong>$1.4B AUD<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synopsis :<\/strong><br \/>\nAustralian Navy first grounds (May 2006) and then scraps (Mar 2008) a fleet of 10 helicopters because of safety concerns arising from\u00a0the avionics software used.\u00a0 The project involved the purchase of 10\u00a0second hand\u00a0Seasprite helicopters that were first designed in the 1960&#8217;s.\u00a0 The helicopters were to be upgraded with the latest weapons and avionics software to enable them to take on the demands of the Australian Navy.\u00a0\u00a0Unspecified &#8220;technical problems&#8221; resulted in the aircraft only being cleared\u00a0to fly from land (not great considering the customer was the\u00a0Navy), in daylight on clear days and \u00a0only for transport missions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contributing factors as reported in the press :<br \/>\n<\/strong>Problems integrating 1960&#8217;s airframes with modern avionics software (failure of a key architectural decision).\u00a0 Highly ambitious requirements.
